Coen Brothers - El Gordo - 29-07-2007

I think I said a while ago that I planned to catch up with all those Coen Bros movies that the rest of the world was enthusing about, but that I seemed to have missed?

Today I grabbed Barton Fink as it was speeding past on the Sky Indie channel in mid-afternoon.

What a great film. Without knowing anything about the Coens, it seems to me that they truly understand the magic of cinema, and the art of cinematography. Those colours, those 3D characters, the every-word-counts writing.

Just wonderful.

Coen Brothers - Sweder - 30-07-2007

A couple of other Coens that you might enjoy are
The Hudsucker Proxy, The Big Lebowski, Fargo and Oh Brother Where Art Thou?

Of the four Lebowski seems the post popular, but Oh Brother would be the one I'd most happily watch again. I agree, their love for film making - attention to detail, use of dialogue and music - comes across time and again. They also have a knack for extracting rich, sometimes quirky performances from their players. Francis McDormand has never been better in Fargo (opposite the constantly reliable William H Macy) and George Clooney (his stock continues to rise IMHO) is great fun in Oh Brother.
