I'm 1,400 kilometres away in Adelaide at the moment, so I missed it, but apparently it was a doozy.

I guess you don't get too many dust storms in that part of the world, huh? They're not infrequent here, with lots of desert and open farm land for the westerlies and (particularly here in South Australia) hot northerlies to whip up and dump on the populated areas. They can be eerie and spectacular, but never any fun.

Meanwhile, here in Adealide this week it's cold, wet and particularly miserable.

I looked on a map, and Adelaide seemed only an inch or so away from Sydney, so thought... oh nothing.

I know the race was in Adelaide, but are you still living in Sydney? I lose track of your movements.

Yes I'm living in Sydney but spending 3 weeks in Adelaide preparing the old family home for sale. The cold weather isn't helping, but it's better than dust storms.

Coincidentally, Sweder is currently not too far from one of the few areas of the UK to experience them (he's probably still wandering around the coutryside, from what I hear). Not very impressive by Aussie standards, but this is what passes for extreme weather over here.

Sweder, I take it you haven't had a Fen Blow during your stay in the area? (You can make your own jokes.)

No blown fens round these parts Dan, though the tractors seem to rake up plumes of dust.
Plenty of turbulent air thanks to the numerous whirlybirds departing Helitech this morning. I love watching jellywobblers do their thing; they seem the most unlikely hoverers when parked up yet are so agile in ther air.

Here we go: the best photos of the Sydney dust storm appeared, naturally enough, in a Boston newspaper: go figure...
